JHALAKATHI

District Hub

About JHALAKATHI

Jhalakathi is a small district with a big reputation for two things: cool mats and fragrant rivers. It is historically an important commercial hub because it sits at the junction of several important rivers. The Sugandha River flows through here, and historically, the air would smell of the spices and rice being traded at the busy ports. Today, the district is famous for the Shital Pati, or cool mat. The village of Gaba is known as the Shital Pati village. Here, artisans weave mats from the Murta plant. These mats are naturally cool to the touch and are a savior during the hot, humid Bengali summers. The weaving is intricate, often creating geometric patterns, and has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Watching the weavers split the cane and weave it with lightning speed is a privilege. Like its neighbor Pirojpur, Jhalakathi shares the floating market culture. The Bhimruli market actually sits on the border of the two districts. The canals here are life. The district is dotted with small bridges and culverts. Agriculture is dominated by guava and hog plum orchards. Driving through the rural roads, you are surrounded by fruit trees. The district is also home to the Sujabad Kella, an ancient fort built during the Mughal era to defend against the Magh and Portuguese pirates. Though mostly in ruins, it speaks to the strategic importance of this river junction. Jhalakathi is also known for its distinct sweets, particularly the Rasogolla of the local markets which are spongy and soaked in light syrup. The district is compact and can be explored relatively quickly, but its charm lies in the slow pace of life. It is a place where the river determines the economy. The launch terminal is the heart of the town, and the sound of boat sirens is the city's clock. Jhalakathi is a district of craftsmanship and fruit, quietly contributing to the culture and economy of the southern delta.
