About LAKSHMIPUR

Lakshmipur often flies under the radar compared to its louder neighbor, Noakhali, but it is an agricultural and riverine giant in its own right. It was once part of Noakhali but has carved out its own identity. The district is known as the Kingdom of Soybeans. It produces the vast majority of the country's soybean crop. Driving through the district in the dry season, you will see fields covered in the green legume, and later, the roads are used to thresh and dry the harvest. It is a unique agricultural landscape that you do not see elsewhere in Bangladesh. The district is also heavily dependent on the Meghna River. The river here is wide and dangerous, serving as the primary fishing ground for thousands of families. The coastal town of Alexander is a fascinating study in man versus nature. For years, the river was eating away the town at a terrifying rate. Massive stone embankments have now been built to stop the erosion, and this embankment has accidentally become the district's biggest tourist spot. In the afternoons, thousands of locals gather on the concrete blocks to watch the river that once destroyed their homes. It is a place of breeze and melancholy. The sunsets here are spectacular, dipping into the wide expanse of the lower Meghna. Nearby, the river teems with Hilsa fishing boats, as this stretch is a major breeding ground for the national fish. Heritage-wise, the Dalal Bazar Zamindar Bari is a major attraction. The ruins of this massive estate, with its overgrown walls and large ponds, speak of a feudal past. There is also the mysterious Khoa Sagor Dighi, a large pond around which many local legends swirl. Lakshmipur is also famous for its betel nuts and coconuts. The markets are always piled high with these cash crops. The people here are river people—tough, weathered, and deeply religious. The Kamankhola Zamindar Bari is another architectural gem, showcasing the fusion of colonial and local styles. Lakshmipur is quieter, greener, and feels more remote, offering a slice of the deep delta life without the chaos of the bigger cities.
