About MAGURA

Magura is a small, serene district that has gained global fame largely due to one man: Shakib Al Hasan. The cricket superstar is the district's favorite son, and you will see his face on billboards and shop signs everywhere. The locals speak of him with a possessive pride. But Magura has an identity that predates cricket. It is a riverine district, crisscrossed by the Nabaganga and Fatki rivers. The landscape is picturesque, with small bridges and green embankments. It is known for being one of the more peaceful districts in the southwest, with a community that is close-knit. The crowning cultural event of Magura is the Katyayani Puja. While this is a Hindu festival, in Magura, it transcends religion. It is celebrated with a grandeur that rivals Durga Puja in Kolkata. The entire town is decorated with massive light installations, gates, and pandals. People from all over the country, regardless of faith, come to witness the spectacle. It is a carnival of lights, food, and music that brings the district to life for a week every year. Magura is also famous for its specialized agriculture. It produces some of the best vegetables in the region, particularly pumpkin and chili. The soil is fertile, fed by the river silt. The district holds a historical gem in the form of the Bhater Vita. Excavations here have revealed ruins of a Buddhist mound, hinting at an ancient settlement that goes back over a thousand years. It is a quiet spot, surrounded by paddy fields, perfect for contemplation. The Siddheshwari Math on the banks of the Nabaganga is another spiritual site, an old temple with a distinct architectural style that reflects the tantric traditions of Bengal. The food in Magura is simple but flavorful. The freshwater fish from the Nabaganga are prized for their taste. A local favorite is the Kumro Bori, small dried pellets made of lentils and pumpkin, which are added to fish curries. The women of Magura are famous for making these in the winter sun. The district serves as a transit point connecting Dhaka to the deeper southwest, but it invites you to slow down. It is a place of river breezes, grand festivals, and a quiet, rural dignity that feels very grounding.
