About MYMENSINGH

Mymensingh is traditionally known as the city of education, but to truly understand it, you must understand its relationship with the Old Brahmaputra River. Unlike the terrifying Jamuna, the Old Brahmaputra here is calmer, flowing with a lazy grace that defines the pace of the city. The riverbank parks are the social hubs where students, poets, and families gather to watch the boats drift by. This river is the setting for the Mymensingh Gitika, the world-famous collection of ancient ballads that tell stories of love and tragedy in rural Bengal. Walking through the city, you can feel that cultural weight. It is a place that values art and literature deeply. The Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Sangrahashala is a testament to this. Located right on the riverbank, this art gallery houses the works of the famine painter Zainul Abedin. Seeing his sketches of the 1943 famine in the place where he grew up is a moving experience that connects art to the harsh realities of the soil. Architecturally, Mymensingh is a museum of feudal grandeur. The Shashi Lodge is the most spectacular. With its Greek statues, musical staircase, and manicured gardens, it is a slice of European aristocracy transplanted into the heart of Bengal. It was built by a local Maharaja, and despite the ravages of time, it remains one of the most photographed buildings in the region. Alexander Castle, or the Iron Cottage, is another curiosity. Built with iron and wood, it has hosted legends like Rabindranath Tagore and Lord Curzon. It stands as a quirky reminder of the city's importance during the British Raj. However, modern Mymensingh is defined by the Bangladesh Agricultural University. This massive campus is a city within a city. It is beautiful, green, and houses a germplasm center that is vital for the country's food security. The botanical gardens here are a lush escape, situated right by the river. But you cannot leave Mymensingh without eating the Muktagachar Monda. This is not just a sweet; it is a legend. Invented two centuries ago in the nearby town of Muktagacha, the recipe is a closely guarded secret of the Gopal Pal family. It is a soft, grainy patty made of milk and sugar that melts in your mouth. Authentic Monda is only available at the original shop, and people travel hundreds of kilometers just to buy a box. Mymensingh is a blend of the scholarly and the sweet, a city that honors its past while feeding the nation's future.
