PABNA

District Hub

About PABNA

Pabna sits at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers, a geographical privilege that has made it a center of trade and culture for centuries. In modern times, it is making headlines for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant at Ishwardi. This massive project is transforming the district, bringing in Russian engineers, modern infrastructure, and a new economic boom. Seeing the cooling towers rise against the backdrop of rural paddy fields is a striking image of Bangladesh's development. But before the nuclear age, Pabna was defined by the Hardinge Bridge. Opened in 1915, this steel truss railway bridge is an engineering marvel of the British era. Walking near it and seeing the red steel structure spanning the vast Padma River is a reminder of the colonial industrial legacy. Next to it stands the Lalon Shah Bridge for road traffic, creating a timeline of infrastructure side by side. Pabna town itself has a distinct old-world charm. It was once a Hindu-majority area with wealthy Zamindars, and you can still see the remains of their influence in the architecture of old mansions like the Tarash Rajbari. The district is also famous for the Pabna Mental Hospital. While often the subject of jokes in popular culture, it is a historic institution founded during the British period and remains the largest facility of its kind in the country. Culturally, the district is proud of being the ancestral home of the legendary actress Suchitra Sen. Her childhood home has been preserved, drawing fans of Bengali cinema who want to pay homage to the screen goddess. Agriculturally, the Ishwardi region of Pabna is the litchi capital. In May, the orchards are heavy with the red fruit. The litchis here are larger and juicier than those found elsewhere, and the entire region buzzes with traders sending truckloads to Dhaka. Pabna is also a hub for the hosiery and textile industry, competing closely with Narayanganj. The 'Pabna Saree' is a brand in itself, known for its durability and intricate designs. The food scene offers a unique sweet called Para Sandesh, a dry, hard sweet made from condensed milk that is delicious and has a long shelf life. Pabna feels like a district that bridges two eras; it holds onto the legacy of the Zamindars and the British railways while simultaneously hosting the most futuristic energy project in the country.
